AUTOCODER

    Possibly the first primitive compiler.  AUTOCODER
   was written by Alick E. Glennie in 1952.  It translated
   symbolic statements into machine language for the
   Manchester Mark I computer.

   Autocoding later came to be a generic term for assembly
   language programming.
